The Batman is an American superhero film released in 2022 based on the DC Comics character Batman. It is a reboot of the Batman film franchise, produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Matt Reeves directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. It stars Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film follows Batman, who has been battling crime in Gotham City for two years, as he investigates corruption while on the trail of the Riddler (Dano), a serial killer who targets Gotham's corrupt elite.

The film was a commercial success, accumulating nearly $770 million against a budget of $185-200 million, making it the seventh-highest-grossing picture of 2022, and got favorable critical reviews. At the 95th Academy prizes, the picture was nominated for three prizes and garnered numerous other honours. The Batman is meant to kick off a shared universe for Batman, with two sequels planned and three spin-off television shows in production for Max, including The Penguin starring Farrell. The first sequel, The Batman - Part II, is scheduled to be released on October 3, 2025.

Overview

When a vicious serial murderer begins murdering Gotham's major political figures, Batman is compelled to find out about the city's secret corruption and question his family's participation.

Plot Summary

Along with Lieutenant Gordon and the GCPD, Batman investigates the murder of Gotham City's mayor. They realize that the Riddler is to blame and is linked to crooked cops and a crime boss. The Riddler also has a grudge against the Waynes, as Bruce Wayne learns that Falcone murdered his parents. In the process, Batman discovers that Selina Kyle is Falcone's daughter. The Riddler is eventually apprehended, but not before wreaking havoc on Gotham. Finally, Batman resolves to instill hope in the city.
