Plane is a 2023 American action thriller movie by Jean-François Richet, based on a script by Charles Cumming and J. P. Davis. Gerard Butler, Mike Colter, Yoson An, and Tony Goldwyn star in the film. The plot revolves around a pilot (Butler) teaming up with a prisoner (Colter) to rescue his passengers from a hostile territory where they had to make an emergency landing.

The film was announced in 2016, bought by Lionsgate in 2019, sold to Solstice Studios in 2020, and then bought back by Lionsgate in 2021. It was filmed in Puerto Rico. On January 13, 2023, the film (Plane) was released in the United States. It earned generally favorable feedback from reviewers and grossed $55 million worldwide.

Plot Summary

In "Plane," commercial pilot Brodie Torrance is forced to make an emergency landing on a rebel-controlled island in the Philippines when his aircraft got damaged during a storm. With the government refusing to get involved, the passengers receive help by a private military unit. Brodie and fugitive homicide suspect Louis Gaspare walk into the bush for help, only to find themselves fighting the rebels. They fight to board the crippled plane and flee the island after rescuing the hostages. Despite various obstacles, including rebel strikes and a lack of fuel, Brodie successfully lands the plane on a nearby island, and everyone is finally rescued.

My Thoughts

Gerry Butler's G-Base production firm has had a successful run of films that, despite the pandemic, have maintained a high level of quality. Plane, his latest action film, has already twice its budget at the box office and has been well welcomed by viewers. Butler plays Brodie Torrance, a Scottish RAF pilot entrusted with flying a commercial airplane from Singapore to Honolulu. Torrance crashes lands the plane on an isolated island in the Philippines after it is struck by lightning. However, when fugitive homicide suspect Louis Gaspare is discovered on board, the situation becomes difficult.

Despite playing with the possibility of Gaspare being a villain, the real star of the film is Butler's portrayal of Torrance, who is a hero in the vein of classic action movie protagonists like John McClane from Die Hard. The film has been compared favorably to Die Hard in terms of its formula, which features an ordinary man who is good with machines and guns fighting his way out of an impossible situation to save the innocent people under his care. While there have been some complaints about the portrayal of the Philippines in the film, it has been praised for its positive depiction of Scotsmen as wily, resourceful, and cool under pressure. Overall, Plane is a thrilling action movie that showcases Butler's talents as both an actor and a producer.
